My Aldis Trip = Big Savings

On my Facebook page yesterday I announced that I had made a trip to Aldi grocery store and was super excited for the deals that I found. I have been to Aldi before but it has been a really long time. I kept reading comments and suggestions about shopping there. Since everyone was raving so much about it I decided I better check it out again.

I got all that you see above for $15.75. I was amazed at the prices they had on their produce. So cheap compared to what I pay at my local Fareway and Hy-vee. Here is the breakdown.

2 gallons whole milk $3.25. I usually pay close to $4.
1 gallon 1% milk $2.83.
Mushrooms $.79 I think it's a great deal when I find them for $1 at the grocery store.
3 lbs tangerines $1.99. Not great but they looked really good and my son wanted them.
Cucumbers $.39 each
Green peppers 3 pk $.99
Bananas $.38 lb
Hamburger buns $.99

I felt good about what I bought. All the produce I got (with the exception of the peppers) are not on the "dirty dozen" list so I am ok with buying them non-organic. Looks like I have a new place to do my shopping until I can grow my own or buy from the Farmers market.

November Grocery Totals

I kept track of all my grocery spending for the month of November. I also kept track of the money saved while using coupons. I have been wanting to track my grocery spending/savings for awhile now but this is the first month I actually wrote down all my purchases as well as the money saved using coupons. Here is what I came up with.

For the month of November my total grocery store spending was $335.62. My total coupon savings was $35.68. This comes out to be about 11% savings. Not huge, but hey, $35 saved is something. It is hard to calculate the exact savings because the savings percent I am keeping track of is only for the coupons that I have used. It doesn't include the amount I saved by purchasing items on sale, which I usually do.

It was interesting to see what my numbers were. I am curious now, so I will probably continue to do this each month and post here my total spent on groceries as well as my coupon savings. I budget $500/mo for groceries and this includes things like toiletries and diapers. This month was a slower month for me and I was well under budget. Let's hope I can continue to do so.

Weekly Grocery Shopping

I am a little behind in getting my weekly grocery shopping picture up. Here is what I bought last week. The deals have been slow so I didn't stock up on anything for the week. I bought a few items for Thanksgiving (cream, fried onions and dinner rolls). After getting home I told my husband I felt a little guilty because I had spent $8 on dinner rolls. I knew I could make homemade rolls, but time and travel would have made it difficult.

I also bought 2 more containers of laundry soap. I didn't have a coupon but thankfully it was on sale for $2.50 per bottle. I am going to be using that on my husbands clothes because we have been having issues with yellow spot on some of his shirts. I will still be using my homemade laundry soap for most things, just not his work clothes unless any of you have any suggestions to fix our problem.

I also got free pasta and pasta sauce courtesy of my wonderful husband who scored some coupons a couple weeks ago at an event.

Total spent was $65.62
Coupon savings was $6.68

Saturday night the hubs and I went out for a couple hours to a friends birthday party on the way home we stopped and bought some fancy ice cream for the family (Ben and Jerry's for the win!)
Total spent there was $17.65.

The total for the week was $83.27

Weekly Grocery Shopping

This was a big shopping week for me. I had a few stock up items, a few items for Thanksgiving dinners and just some things we needed. Here is the breakdown.

11/13 Needed to pick up a shirt for son's concert so while I was at Walmart picked up 2 loaves of bread and 7 lbs of bananas. Total spent $6.72.

11/16 Walmart. Box of overnight diapers for my daughter and a bottle of laundry soap to get me through till I make another batch of homemade soap. Total spent $20.74, coupon saving $2.00.
11/16 Weekly grocery trip to Fareway. As you can see from the picture I picked up some stock up items including cereal (for chex mix), margarine (even better deal this week than last, $.59), canned pineapple. It was my son's birthday so he took treats to school (oatmeal cream pies) and the rest is stuff either we needed, wanted or was for Thanksgiving dinners.

Total spent $68.74, coupons saving $7.50.

The grand total for the week was $96.20, coupon savings $9.50.

The grand total for the month is $229.29, coupon savings is $27.00.

Weekly Grocery Shopping

Over the weekend we headed into the store to get a gallon of milk and a few cans of tomato sauce and tomato paste to make chili. Total spent there was $11.03.

My husband took the day off on Tuesday so Monday night he headed into the grocery store to pick up a few snacks. It seriously was all junk food. Tuesday was declared junk food day and we won't be doing that again for a long while. I didn't get a picture which I would have been embarrassed to post anyway! Let's just say there was a few frozen pizzas, some 2 liters of pop, strawberry wafers and few other random snack items. Total spent was $17.34. Ouch. We really could have done without that shopping trip.Here was my weekly grocery shopping trip yesterday. I mostly picked up fruit and stocked up on margarine at it's rock bottom price of $.67. I still do some of my baking with margarine. Most of the items I bought didn't have coupons. My total spent was $41.92. Coupon savings was $.50.

Not a great week for savings. I didn't really stock up on anything either since the sales have been slow. My total for the week is $70.29, making my monthly total $133.09. My total coupon savings for the month is $17.50.

Weekly Shopping Trip November 2, 2011

As I said in my previous post I am going to be keeping track of the amount of money I spend on groceries as well as the amount of money I save by using coupons. I will be doing this for the month of November just to see how well I do with my $500 budget. I have been lazy lately and using the debit card instead of my envelope system and I know I have gone over these last couple months. This is hopefully going to get me back on track. Plus, I think it sounds kinda fun! So let's get started!

Oh and by the way, I will be keeping a running total of both what I spent and what I saved on the left sidebar.

The cereal was a stock up item and the pop was a splurge!

After looking at my receipt I noticed that I was charged $.48 extra for 4 packages of hotdogs. So I should have saved an additional $1.92. Grr, guess I will have to talk to customer service next time I am in.

My savings for the week with just using coupons was 27%. If I factored in the items that were also on sale, that percentage would be higher.

Keeping Track of Grocery Savings

For the month of November I will be posting pics of my weekly shopping trips. We are really trying to cut back our spending and get some money saved up. My pantry and freezer are pretty full right now so I really don't need much expect fresh produce, dairy and any stock up deals that I see.

I am also going to be keeping track of the amount I spend each week and the amount I save using coupons. Sometimes it is hard to keep track of the actual amount you saved on items because sometimes they are on sale as well. For now I am just going to keep track of the actual coupon amounts.

Weekly Grocery Shopping

Apparently I have gotten into a bad habit of going to the grocery store multiple times each week. I really need to get back to making lists and making do without until the next shopping day. Here is what I spent last week.

Fareway-2 gallons of milk, bananas, and tortillas $11.53
Fareway-lunchmeat, cheese, oranges, apples, bananas, strawberries, and cream cheese $31.92

Total spent last week $43.45.

I was at $156 for the month so this brings me to $199.45. Um yeah, I won't be staying under $200 like I wanted to.

This week we have already gone to the store twice and it is only Wednesday. Yesterday I went and bought bananas and ice cream sandwiches, spending $5. Today hubby ran into town and purchased some drinks, chips, Canadian bacon and pepperoni for homemade pizzas. Today was the last day of school so we have 4 extra teenagers here. We made homemade pizza so we saved money doing this as opposed to ordering out or getting frozen pizzas. He spent a total of $22.

So for the month we are at $227. I know I need to run to the store one more time before the end of the month. I have to pick up a few things for dinner at my mothers house on Monday.

Weekly Grocery Shopping

I am still trying to stay within my $200 grocery budget for May. The first week I did really well only spending about $36. Last week was a little crazy and I spent way more than I anticipated.

Last weekend my husband wanted to smoke some meat and I forgot to pull it out of the freezer. He ended up spending about $50 on meat and ingredients. I took lunch up to my in-laws house and bought a few snack items and spent about $21. I also went to the store and bought strawberries, bananas and yogurt spending about $11. So for the week I came in around $82.

I headed to Trader Joe's today since I was out that way anyway. I decided to go ahead and stock up on my strawberries while I was out there. The kids and I eat smoothies a few times a week and this is the best place at the moment to buy organic berries. Soon I will be able to buy at the Farmer's Market and also pick them in my own garden.

So I bought 10 bags of strawberries, 2 bags of raspberries, 2 quarts of yogurt, russet potatoes and sweet potatoes, all organic for $38.

Total spent for the month is $156. Starting to think that I won't hit my goal.

Weekly Shopping and Pantry Challenge Wrap Up

I finished up the pantry challenge spending about $170 on groceries for the month. That is $320 less than what I normally budget for and $30 lower than my goal for the challenge. Now I would like to say that all that money is going into our savings account but this month has been brutal with unexpected expenses (more on that to come later) and that extra money had to go to other places.

I feel pretty good about the challenge and plan to do it again in the future. We cleaned alot out of our freezer but still need more room because I am hoping to buy some grass feed beef sometime. My plan is to try and not buy any meat for a little while. We'll see how that goes. I still am not ready to defrost the freezer yet.

I am actually excited to scope out the deals again in February! I just tried to ignore them this past month.

I did score some pretty good deals at Hy-Vee on Friday. And I guess I did a little stocking up too! Hubby was completely out of lunches for work and Hy-Vee had a great sale. Here is what I got.

The best deal of the day was...
(10) Weight Watcher Smart Ones Frozen Meals (Hubbys lunches) these were on sale 3/$5.00 they had a peelie on them for $4.00/10. Then I had coupons for buy 5 get a free breakfast sandwich and also buy 3 and get a free flat bread. So, I was able to get 2 free flatbreads and 3 free breakfast sanwiches. So I paid $7 for 15 meals. Woot!

Weekly Shopping and Eat From the Pantry Update

We are doing really well with the Eat from the Pantry Challenge. We ate at home all week last week except one night. I made chili for the first time last week as well. Usually my husband does this so it was fun for me to make it. I must say it was pretty good. Not that you can really mess up chili.

I can see our freezer inventory depleting but not by much. It makes me feel good to know that I have a well stocked freezer and we have been able to eat from it this month and save some money on groceries. I feel good about where we are at. I didn't need much from the store this week.

Also, I might be trying for the first time ever placing an order for some locally grown organic flours. These are a little bit on the pricier side but I think I am willing to give them a try. I am starting to run low of flour so I am going to be needing to get some. We will see how it goes.

Eat From the Pantry Grocery Shopping Trip

Well today I broke down and went to the store. With the exception of buying a couple pounds of bananas and some dishwashing detergent at the beginning of the month today was the first time I have been grocery shopping this month. I went in with list and stuck to it! I didn't buy anything extra except for a pair of Christmas jammies for Brodie (putting away for next year) that were on clearance for $2.00.

With our Eat from the Pantry Challenge going on my shopping was a little different this week. I didn't stock up on any loss leaders. Usually I try and stock up on the great deals of the week. This week I based my shopping solely on what we needed at the moment (ok, with the exception of the Electrasol. That was on roll back and I wanted to use those coupons before they expire at the end of the month).

My total spent for the evening was $52.33, my savings in coupons alone were $45.10. This doesn't include that almost everything I bought was already on sale as well. I would say I had a pretty good night of savings!

Weekly Shopping Trip and Holiday Clearance

Well tonight I did my weekly grocery shopping. I am going to try and get back to my once a week grocery shopping night. The last few weeks I have made multiple trips, didn't have my coupons organized and didn't follow my list very well. Tonight I was prepared. I had my coupons cut and organized in my binder and left with my lists ready for each store.

I didn't take any pictures but I did some major stocking up tonight. Here are the highlights.

At Fareway I spent $111.82 and saved $16.00 in coupons. My major stockups were:

Boneless skinless chicken breast @ $1.59 lb (my packages were weighed in at $1.56 lb)
Flour and sugar were on sale this week.
Maxwell House Coffee @ $4.99, regular price is $7.99.
Imperial Margarine @ $.59, getting ready for all that holiday baking!
Fisher Peanuts @ 3/$5.00, I had 6 $1 off coupons making them 6/$4.00.
Tony's frozen pizzas and pouches for $.75 each after coupons.
I got all my produce at Fareway, they have great deals this week including bananas for just $.29 lb!

At Target I spent $53.27 and my savings were $76.49 after coupons and clearance! The only bad thing about Target is I am a sucker for the clearance candy. Ugh! All Halloween items are 50% off right now. Tonight I stocked up on M&M's. I won't tell you how many bags I bought! The bags were regularly $2.50, marked 50% off then Target has a coupon out for $1/2 bags here. This made them $.99 each. My family are big time M&M eaters especially when we play cards so this was a great deal to me. Who cares is they are orange and black!

Another big stock up item for me at Target was Ocean Spray Juice. It is priced at $1.98, using the Target $1/1 here made them just $.98. Good stock up price for me. I also bought 6 Beef Chuck Steaks all ranging in price from $1.55-$2.95. It is on sale this week for $1.99 lb, regularly $3.99 lb.

I also bought my oldest son 2 shirts that were on clearance. I always skim the clothing section when I am there. You never know what you will find. These shirts were regularly $12.99 marked down to $3.24.

All is all it was a good night. I spent quite a bit of money but I am well stocked on some very expensive items, that I feel like I got really good deals on.

Here is what I spent at Target today. I stocked up big time on the Eggo waffles. I had picked up a ton of $1.00 off coupons at Hy-Vee a few months back. There were gobs of them at the customer service counter and I have been just holding onto them for a great deal like this!

Weekly Shopping Trip 6/16

I did so much better sticking to my list this week. After surveying my pantry and freezer today I realized I really didn't need much this week. I have lots of lettuce in my garden and lots of apples in my fridge. Plus, I still have some bananas left over frozen from last week to make more bread and muffins.

My goal was to stay below $50! I may have to run in later in the week to get another gallon of milk. I never know so I only bought 1 tonight. I did pretty good and the best part? I stuck to the list. The only extra thing I bought was the popcorn and it was on clearance!
