Weekly Wrap Up

Wow is it Friday already? I have had a busy week full of staying home with sick kids. It is time again for the weekly wrap up where I list the things I did this week to be frugal.

I did the usual washing clothes in cold water, turned the dishwasher heat off, turned off lights when not in use, and recycle. Some other things I did were:

*Made and ate dinner at home every night.
*I didn't leave the house 1 day this week, saving gas.
*Picked up 2 55 gallon drums from the bottling company to make rain barrells. (Very excited about this!)
*Started a "scraps" container on our counter for food to eventually put in our compost box hubby is going to build.
*Started back with our cash only system instead of using our debit card for everything. I made a new envelope system to hold the money you can see it here.
*We used our cloth napkins all week and that is going well.
*Picked up a pop bottle on the side of the road! :) Is that being frugal or pathetic?
*I was able to turn the heat off yesterday morning and even opened up the windows! I still haven't turned it back on.
*We also received our refund from the cable company from when we switched over to a cheaper service.

To see what others did this week check out Jennifer's blog at Getting Ahead.

  2. We will be getting our barrels from my brother in law any day now. Maybe Julia can have a how-to workshop for us and we can build them together!

I may have to consider using my old coupon holder someday for my cash too. Thanks for the idea! I bought my Dave Ramsey wallet on Ebay a long time ago for maybe $10 but the envelopes are wearing out and I don't want to buy new ones so they have been taped and taped!

  4. Sara,
Who did you contact from the bottling company - did they cost you anything?

Very interested in how you came about finding these!

Great idea on the cash only - I use that but use my debit card - I hate carrying cash but I may have to do that!

  5. Hi Nancy,

I got the information from my sister. I am not sure where she heard.

I got the barrels from Atlantic Bottling Company in Atlantic Iowa. The have an office in Waukee Iowa which is about 25 minutes from where I live. They sent them there and I picked them up. They sell them for $5 a piece.

As for the envelope system, I hate carrying cash also. But unfortunately I spend way to much money when I use my debit card. Hopefully this will help me!

  6. i keep thinking about picking up cans. The kids do it for a few reasons. they originally did it for money (go to dahl's for cash). gabe does it now for shooting practice (we don't buy canned drinks). the rest of us do it for "cache in, trash out" -- which is environmental clean up. i say any reason to keep the roads and grounds looking clean is good. you would not believe the cleanliness of canadian roads -- still extremely memorable after 24 years.
