Our Garden is In!

I worked on our garden the last couple days. It is almost finished. I still have some peppers, herbs and melons to plant but everything else is in! We expanded our garden quite a bit this year. This is the biggest garden I have had so far. We have a great variety of produce including...

Grape Tomatoes
Green Peppers
Yellow Peppers
Red Peppers
Lots of varieties of Hot Peppers (for hubbies homemade salsa)
Lots of varieties of herbs
Onions red and white
Lettuce head and leaf
Green Beans
Sugar Snap Peas

I still have lots of tomatoes in my freezer from last years crop. I think I will use them to make a huge batch of spaghetti sauce and can it. I have never done this, but I am sure I could do it. What else can you do with frozen tomatoes?

Having a garden is definitely a Finer Thing for me! Check out Amy's Finer Things Friday and then head over to Frugal Friday at Life as Mom.

  1. Your garden looks great. I wish I could have a big garden like that.

  2. Your garden looks really good. I wish that we had a big enough yard to do a garden that big. Instead I have to keep my garden in pots on my deck. At least my parents have a large garden so we will still get some nice produce in addition to our little garden.

  3. Thanks Tiffany and Buffie. It takes a lot of work but I enjoy doing it.

  4. I wish I had the gumption to have a garden at all let alone one as large as yours. You go girl!

  5. good grief i think your garden may be bigger than my whole yard! All I am having for veggie growing is a raised bed 6 feet by 4 feet, 3 hanging baskets for cherry tomatoes, and 2 containers for herbs.

  6. I'm heading out between rains this afternoon to try to weed! You have a fabulous looking garden!

  7. Looking good! Hopefully it will stop raining long enough here for me to get some work done out in mine.

  8. Your garden looks awesome. Can't wait to see the progress!

  9. Looks great! We planted a big garden that we share with friends each year. I also got a bunch of plants to do in my two small garden plots at my house. We have a large yard but also a large dog who is determined to do his own landscaping. LOL!!! I'm starting small to see if we can keep him out of the plants.:-)

  10. When do you first notice some action in the garden? I planted mine last week and went to check on it today and I still don't see anything. I'm probably not patient enough! But, I did notice some bean seeds that were laying around and it just makes me nervous that I didn't do a good job in planting. I also noticed some digging going on by my cucumbers. I hope I can replant if something dug those up.

  11. I freeze tomatoes and then put an "eyeballed" amount in things instead of tomato sauce. If you didn't peel them first, just run them under warm water and the peel slips off. (If you did peel them, don't bother next year!) :>)

I also fill my crockpot to heaping (no lid) and turn it on high until they melt down then low until enough water evaporates to make tomato sauce. I've been freezing it but I really need to get brave enough to can.

I also sub frozen tomatoes for recipes that call for canned tomatoes (stuffed green peppers is a favorite around here). If I have lots of time, I just throw them in and wait for them to melt; otherwise I microwave them. Make sure you use the water that comes off - that's where your flavor is!

  12. Your garden looks great! I plant a lot of the same things in mine. Do you have a method for keeping down the weeds? I always start out well, but by July they usually have won the battle. I'm wondering if I should use a bunch of mulch or something??

  13. I use grass clippings to keep the weeds down. It works great!
