Homemade Croutons

I don't know about you but I am not a fan of the heals of bread. If it is homemade bread I don't mind it but store bought bread I don't like. Instead of throwing it away, I put the heals in a bag and toss them into the freezer. Now usually they sit there until I get a huge pile and then we go feed some birds. But the other day, I decided to make homemade croutons! I love croutons and have always wanted to try this.

~Ingredients~
1/2 cup Olive Oil
2 lg. Garlic Cloves , minced
1/3 cup grated Parmesan Cheese
1-2 Tablespoons dry parsley

Mix ingredients together. Use a pastry brush and spread on both sides of bread. Cut into small squares.Place in single layer on cookie sheet and bake at 325 degrees for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown. Cool. Keep in sealed container. Keeps 4-6 weeks. They turned out great. Next time I think I may add a little more garlic or even some garlic salt to give it just a tad more flavor.

  1. yum....I've also saved them up and thrown them in the food processor for fresh bread crumbs.

  2. I do the same as Michelle and use the heels to make bread crumbs. Great idea about the croutons.

  3. That's a great idea. I usually do bread crumbs, feed the birds or keep them for a breakfast casserole. Have to try these though, the kids love croutons but I never buy them.

  4. Love the idea, they look really good. I will have to try it (when I have enough heals because I have been throwing them away lately because no one was eating them.) Gonna try bread crumbs too. Thanks

  5. We cut the bread, THEN toss the squares with melted butter or olive oil and spices right on the cookie sheet. I don't know which way is easier b/c I've never tried your way. We LOVE homemade croutons!

  6. Glad to see you young ladies are being frugal. Here is an idea that you might want to try. Sprinkle a little sugar and cinnamon on the cubes. It worked for my 3 boys as they were growing up.
