Homemade Hamburger Buns

Hamburgers were on the menu for dinner the other night and then I realized that I didn't have any buns. The roads were bad due to some heavy snow and wind so going to the store was not an option. Plus we are on an "Eat From the Pantry Challenge" so I thought why don't I just try and make my own buns? Hmmm. Sounds good. I have made homemade biscuits, dinner rolls, and bread how hard can buns be?

Guess what? Not hard at all. Yes it is a little time consuming but overall they taste better and are much healthier for you than store bought buns. Here is the recipe I used.

1 cup milk
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup unsalted butter
4 1/2 cups flour (white, wheat or a mix)
1 package instant yeast
1 Tablespoon honey
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg, room temperature

Heat milk, water, honey and butter until butter is melted. Cool to 120 degrees. Slowly beat in egg.

Mix 2 cups of flour, yeast, and salt. Mix into the milk mixture. Stir in the rest of the flour 1/2 cup at a time. Beat well after each addition.

When dough pulls together (it will form a ball) turn onto floured surface and knead for 5 minutes. Divide dough into 12-16 equal pieces (depending on what size you want the bun). I used a pizza cutter to divide the dough. Shape into round balls, flatten slightly and place onto a greased (or silpat covered) baking sheet. Let rise 30-35 minutes. When buns have doubled in size, bake at 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes. My buns didn't rise to double in size in 35 minutes. I am not sure if they needed a longer rise time or if I did something wrong in the process of mixing. I am guessing they didn't rise long enough because my house is really chilly right now and I had them in a bad spot for rising. However, they still turned out really good and all the kids ate them. I suppose it is a good thing they didn't double in size either because they fit the hamburger patty perfectly. They were a little dense though so next time I am going to try and let them rise a bit longer and see what happens and hopefully I can get them to be a little more fluffy. 1. They look great! I wish I could make my own buns, but all the recipes I see have too much dairy and eggs and I know with having to substitute all that it wouldn't come out right. Maybe some day I will try though, I am sure they are so much better than the cheap store bought we use.

  4. Ever try sitting the plastic wrap covered pan on a heating pad to rise? It works really well.
