I hate cleaning my shower. Let me rephrase that I really hate cleaning my shower. With 6 people in the house all sharing the same shower it creeps me out to think what is living in my shower. I do a deep cleaning of the shower every so often. I admit I probably don't deep clean often enough. I have been reading some articles about homemade daily shower cleaners and this intrigued me.
I am curious has anyone tried something like this? I like the idea of spraying something on each day after getting out of the shower and leaving it on. My goal is to not so much prolong the amount of time between my deep cleanings but to just maintain the cleanness of the shower and tub. I still give the younger kids baths and I HATE putting them into our tub, knowing that we have all showered in there EEEK!
I was pretty set on trying the vinegar and water solution and just spraying it on each day after my shower, but then I read somewhere that it is acidic so it will eat away at the caulk around your tub. I have found many other recipes, but wondered if any of you have tried anything that you would recommend.
Thanks for the help.
Ugh, out of all the house cleaning chores, cleaning the shower is my most hated! I used a vinegar based cleaner (vinegar, lemon juice, and water in a squirt bottle) on my old ceramic tub. We have a new plastic type tub/wall unit now and in the "directions" that came with the unit it said not to use an acid based cleaners as it takes the protective enamel right off. Sooo, I am now at a loss too. I have just been using Simple Green (I bought a gallon of this stuff ages ago, and diluted with water it has lasted for ever and can clean anything)for cleaning about every other day, alternating with baking soda on the off day (which I dilute with water to make a thin paste, don't think it's scatching). About once a month I use bleach mixed with water in a squirt bottle to kill anything.
ReplyDeleteOh shoot, I never heard that about the vinegar hurting the tub. I bought the scrubbing bubbles automatic cleaner and I don't like it. It doesn't actually work that well, the refills run out quickly and are pricey, and the batteries wore out fast. Hello, I got the cleaner because I'm LAZY, so I really hated changing the batteries all the time. I just put a little vinegar and water in a spray bottle to spray daily. I don't like the vinegar smell. I think the best scenario would be to buy the generic Target daily shower cleaner. It smells nice and it's probably made not to hurt your tub and not too expensive. If only I could figure out how to make that myself!!
ReplyDeleteIf we have some watered down pop we won't finish, I pour it down the tub or various drains to prevent clogging. I think it works!
I posted a neat tip on my newest blog.....I cleaned all the soap scum off my glass shower stall, then dried it very well. I then wiped it down with a dryer sheet. I swear I havent seen a flake of soap scum since! I never thought it would work so good, but it has indeed! Its been well over a month, and no soap scum....and we used to get ALOT! We have very hard water, and we use that shower alot! Just a nice little frugal tip to a great frugal blog I enjoy reading :)

I never observed that about the therapy injuring the tub. I purchased the cleaning pockets automated solution and I don't like it. It doesn't actually work that well, the replacements run out easily and are costly, and the battery power put on out quick.
