Homemade Butter Cream Icing

My two oldest boys birthdays were in February. Each year when I make their cakes I try and go with what they are interested in at the moment. One is really into his new Sonic video game and the other has a love for the army.

Instead of purchasing frosting from the store I now make it from scratch. Here is the Wilton Butter Cream frosting that I used. Very easy and so yummy!

1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1/2 cup margarine or butter
1 tsp clear vanilla (mine wasn't clear)
4 cups sifted confectioners sugar
2 T milk

In large bowl, cream shortening and butter with electric mixer. Add vanilla. Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often. When all sugar has been mixed in, icing will appear dry. Add milk and beat at medium speed until light and fluffy. Keep bowl covered with a damp cloth until ready to use.
