My baby girl is a little over 6 months old. After visiting with our Pediatrician, he gave us the go ahead to start her on "stage one" baby foods. With my younger children I eagerly went to the store to pick up those tiny jars of food. What a waste of money that was!
Making your own baby food is incredible easy. Here is a step by step guide to making your own sweet potato baby food. I will blog about other fruits and veggies as I make them.
Since potatoes are on the dirty dozen list I decided to buy them organic. I bought a 3 lb bag for $3.99. First wash the potatoes and poke them on all sides with a fork.Wrap each potato in aluminum foil and place in the oven. Bake at 400 degrees for 30-45 minutes (I baked for 40 minutes).Pull out potatoes and let cool for a few minutes. Once cool, remove from aluminum foil. I cut each potato in half and the skins easily peeled off.Place peeled potatoes in a blender or food processor. Puree to desired consistency. If you want it a little runnier, add a little water. I stored what I was going to feed her for the next 2 days in the fridge and froze the rest in ice cube trays. Once they were frozen I placed the cubes into a ziplock in the freezer. Now I can just pull out what I need each day.So easy! I think she likes it! This week we are moving on to carrots and apples! This post is linked to the Frugal Tuesday Tip and Frugal Friday.
FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI did the same with all of my kids (and the oldest is now 24 and the baby is 15). The best thing is, no additives...
ReplyDeleteAwwww, she's a cutie!!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a winner from that face!! :) She's precious!
ReplyDeleteI plan on making my own baby food too! Those little jars are expensive! Plus by making it I will be 100% sure what is in it. :) She is so cute!
ReplyDeleteGreat job! I noticed on the foods list that I keep with my coupons that regular potatoes are on the dirty dozen but for some reason sweet potatoes are actually on the clean 15. Never hurts to go organic anyway.
ReplyDeleteI have always made my own baby food and my girls LOVE it! I even mix up items. There is a wonderful site I use (www.wholesomebabyfood.com). They have great recipes and ideas.
ReplyDeleteHint: I found that making my own applesauce as opposed to buying unsweetened store variety did not save me. It takes A LOT of apples to make any amount of applesauce. I found it cheaper to get the store variety. Other than that I made everything.
Amber I LOVE that site. I have read up on each of the foods. I actually just made apples today. Will have to price compare the applesauce at the store. Thanks for the input.
ReplyDeleteSara - Isn't that site the best!!! I thought about trying the baby led style with my 2nd, but got scared when she tried to stick a whole banana in her mouth. hehehe! I went back to puree.
ReplyDeleteI make all kinds of crazy mixtures. I even mix meat and fruit because meat can be tricky! I have made it all. If you ever want to know anything about a certain puree just shoot me an email (I had once emailed you about trading - that is me).
Have fun!!!
