Saving Money on Gas

Gas prices in our area are $3.69 gallon. It's possible it will hit $4 a gallon by April. Last month my husband and I each filled up our vehicles 3 times during the month and we ended up going $57 over our budgeted amount. With the increase in gas prices I am looking for ways to cut back our cost. Aside from going out and buying a more fuel efficient car, here are some ideas.

Turn off your car. If you will be sitting idle for more than 30 seconds, turn your car off. You will use less gas by turning your car back on then just sitting there keeping it running.

Turn off your air conditioner. This makes the motor run harder using more energy. In the summer park your car in the shade if possible. Roll the windows down a tiny bit to let the air circulate.

Brake less. Acceleration is what uses most of your vehicles gas. Keep a safe distance and try and maintain your speed. If possible, avoid heavy traffic and routes with lots of lights.

The lighter the better. Get rid of any unnecessary weight. Clean out your trunk and only keep in the car what you need.

Combine your trips. Try and run all your errands for the week at the same time.

Car pool or take turns with another adult when it comes to going to work or shuffling kids to games or practice.

Have any tips to share on reducing gas usage? This post is linked to the Frugal Tuesday Tip hosted here at Learning the Frugal Life.

  1. 2 other good tips... make sure your tires are inflated to the correct pressure, and also make sure you have a clean air filter.

  2. The lowest per gallon price in our town today was $3.89 a gallon. We have been up to $4 once or twice in the last two months. We do what you suggested, minimizing trips and carpooling. Even my youngest, Lyndsey, who just got her license, realizes the value of us all going to town in one car to save $$.
