Energy Tips For Using Your Dishwaher

You can cut the energy consumption of your dishwasher by following a few simple guidelines.

First, only run your dishwasher when you have a FULL load. Typical dishwashers use 3-7 gallons of hot water per load so make the most of it. Try and use the shortest cycle possible. If your dishes are really dirty maybe you could rinse them in a sink of water before putting them in the washer, therefore eliminating the rinse/hold cycle.

Run your dishwasher at night in off peak hours. I always turn mine on before I go to bed at night. If your dishwasher is next to your fridge put a layer of insulation between the two.

One last tip is don't use the heated dry cycle. Open up the door and allow your dishes to air dry. This can save you as much as 10%.

  1. unrelated: what store has the best price on mulch? I am vain. The big bags of red cedar mulch look nice on top of my compost dressing (which does not look so nice).
