Weekly Shopping 6/8 and What Happens When You Don't Follow Your List

I did my weekly shopping tonight instead of tomorrow night since we had some other errands to do in town tonight. I only had a few things on my list so I was pretty excited because I knew I was going to be way under budget. Here is what I got.

Fareway
Large Eggs $1.19
5lbs bananas $2.98
2 brown bags of old bananas for banana bread $.99 each
1.54 lb Red grapes $1.52
3.58 lb Strawberries $3.54
3.96 lb Strawberries $3.92

Total $15.13

Then I went to Wal-Mart. Ohhh Wal-Mart. How I loath thee. That place gets me every time. Here is my problem. I have great intentions. I have a list. I have my coupons ready. The problem? I don't ever stick to my list. Here was my list tonight.

Milk
Eggs
Deoderant for Will
Mini Loaf Pan
Flour
Fruit
Margarine

Here is what I bought.

Mini Loaf Pan $1.57
Frozen Chicken Tenders $3.98
Milk $2.25
Blueberry Muffin Mix (my favorite kind, a TOTAL splurge) $2.26
GV Mandarin Oranges $.54 x 4 = $2.16
Canned Green Beans $.54 x 4 = $2.16
Hormel Meal $1.98 Free with coupon
25 lb Bag of Flour $8.68
Brown Sugar $1.42 - $.30 coupon = $1.12
Marshmallows $1.00
Cream Cheese $1.64 x 2 $3.28 - $1.00 coupon = $2.28
Margarine $.66 x 5 = $3.30
String Cheese $5.88
Eggs $1.22 What? Last week they were $1.00
Deoderant for Hubby 2 pack $3.87 x 2 = $7.74 (stocked up and yes he is brand specific so we don't get cheap deoderant for him)
World of Warcraft 24oz Mt Dew Pops for older boys and friends (special treat from Dad, this is what happens when he shops with me!) $1.05 x 4 = $4.20

Total Spent $50.60

The highlighted part is what was on my list. Everything else was impulse buys. If I had just stuck to my list I would have saved over 50%. My total would have been just over $25.00 if I would have gotten what was only on that list. This is obviously an area that I really need to work on. And yes, I am beating myself up just a bit tonight.

Total Spent for the Night $65.73

  1. Don't feel bad about spending 65 bucks. If you use it all and it doesn't go to waste then it was money well spent, right?
My husband is the same way with deodorant. He only wanted SpeedStick 24/7. I got some deodorant of another brand free at CVS a few weeks ago, and he tried it and said it's okay. I think he's more open to other brands now :)

  2. Glad to see that my hubby is not the only one who is brand specific on deodorant. :) He is also brand specific with other things too, like TP.

I hear ya about not sticking to a list...I have done that many times and after further evaluation realize that I will use the impulse buys so it will save me another time. :)
