Apples!

I am trying something new today. Over the weekend I came into a very large crop of green apples. My in-laws have a neighbor who graciously let my sister-in-law and myself take as many apples off of his tree as we wanted. I came home with 7 bags full!

Now, I am experimenting with what to do with all of them. They are quite tart. So far I have tried drying them and I made one pot of applesauce. The dried apples aren't very good, they are pretty sour. The applesauce though is quite tasty. I just added some sugar. I think I am going to keep making applesauce and then I will can it later in the week.

I also plan to cut some up and freeze them for baking pies, crisps and turnovers.

  2. You could try sweetening it with other fruits instead of sugar. I definitely recommend making a cooked apple mix that would go well in cobblers, turnovers and pies.

  3. I justed finished up canning close to 2oo apples. I made apple pie filling, apple slices, and homemade applesauce. You probably need to add a lot of sugar and cinnamon to get rid of the sour taste from the apples.

  4. You could make apple butter from your applesauce.

  6. Great idea with the red hots. I think that makes really good applesauce too. However you are cooking the apples down, in a crockpot or a pan, you can just add the red hots and cook until they dissolve. It leaves the applesauce a pretty red with a sweet, cinnamon flavor. Really good. I just cooked down a large crockpot full of those apples for applesauce, too. I think the applesauce is pretty good. Mom B
