I was excited when Krista contacted me to do a review of a Discovery Toys product. I was even more excited when this arrived in the mail. Discovery Toys Motorworks. This junior mechanic set comes with a screwdriver, a working power tool (requiring 2 AA batteries), and all the parts to build three vehicles. The vehicles include a race car, prop plane and motorcycle. Also included are a toolbox to keep everything in, manual, extra tool bit and extra screws. This toy is recommended for children 4 years and up.
You can see the full company description here.
My kids have had an absolute blast with this toy. We have been playing with it daily since receiving it. It is very easy for them to manipulate. The screws go in and out easily and they both love the power tool! My 4-year-old spends a lot of time sorting out the different colored of screws into piles and then tries to figure out which pieces go to which vehicle. He is completely content sitting there putting the vehicles together and then taking them apart. I love that it comes with a toolbox to keep everything in. There are lots of little pieces, so this toy is not recommended for children under 3 due to this reason. I was very impressed with the sturdiness of the product as well. My kids have put the vehicles together, driven them all around the house, taken them back apart, and put them back together again. They are surely going to get a lot of wear around this house!
My overall impression of this toy is a good one. The toy seems tough to break which is a good thing around our house. The toy teaches order of operation, following instructions, color matching, and helps develop hand eye coordination. These things hit the learning stage my 4 year old is in right now. As I said above this toy keeps his attention for a long time. My (soon to be) 3 year old enjoys the toy on a different level. I think he is a little too busy for it right now, but he loves the tools and playing with the cars when they are put together. I would recommend this toy if your child is in the same stage my 4 year old is in as it appears to be a well built toy that helps development and is fun to play with.

I purchased a Discovery Toy years ago when my teenage nephews were little. I bought them a portable min golf course and they loved it!! I am waiting for someone to purchase my kids a Discovery Toy since I think their products are really educational AND fun!
ReplyDeleteI love Discovery Toys, and would love to win one of these! :) I think one of my favorite Discover Toys is the pounding toy that is shaped like a ship (and has balls with it). Obviously, I can't remember what it is called, but I really liked how sturdy it was.
ReplyDeleteWe only had a few Discovery toys when my son was a baby. We have the stacking cups and my children still like to play with them - they are 5 & 3 now!
ReplyDeleteGreat drawing!

We have a number of DT toys... our ALL time favorite though is the Super Marbleworks! We've owned this toy for years, and my boys (now 6 & 8) still LOVE it! I am continuously amazed at the designs they come up with... like when my 6yo old started the marble track on his bed and then had a jump that sent the marbles onto another track on the floor. For younger kids, check out the Bug Game!

I've never purchased a discovery toy before but, I have 2 boys, 2 girls and another on the way in January and I am sure they could put it to some good use. We don't buy toys that are advertised on television, we try to stay more towards with creative influences.

We purchased Motor Works and we are having lots of fun with it -- the power tool is great! BUT I lost the instructions! We are having a particularly difficult time re-building the plane. Can anyone copy and send me the instructions (electronically or by mail)? It would be very much appreciated. M. Tarampi, 4851 McLure Ave. Richmond BC, Canada, V7C 4K1
