Looking Towards Spring

(August 2009)

We are suppose to get 10" of snow in the next 24 hours. But you know what I am doing? Planning my garden! I am SO ready for Spring. I have been doing lots of reading, making diagrams and lists, planning out what is going into our garden this year.

We had a pretty successful year last year and I am hoping for a better year this year. I want to be able to preserve more food to last us through most of the winter if possible. Here is what is on the list to go in the main garden.

Cantaloupe
Watermelon
Cucumbers
Zucchini
Sugar Snap Peas
Tomatoes
Green, Red and Yellow Peppers
Lettuce
Broccoli

*Hubbys choices of hot peppers for his salsa
Jalapeno
Anaheim
Serrano
Habanero
Banana
Chili

I also have a strawberry patch that I made bigger last year, so I am hoping for a nice crop of berries this year.

Here is what I am wanting to add.

Raspberries. My sister gave me 2 yellow raspberry bushes last year for my birthday. I am hoping these survive the winter. If they do, the plan is to move them (havn't figured out where yet) and add maybe 1 or 2 more red raspberry bushes.

I want to add another apple tree. Hubby got me a Gala apple tree last year for Mother's Day. I am not sure what other variety I want to get. I have to do a little research on this.

I want a plum tree and already have a place for it to be planted.

I want to try asparagus again. I know it is a long process and you can't harvest it for 3 years, but dang-it I want to grow it!

We are also going to plant an herb garden. I am still in the process of figuring out what all is going in there.

I am getting pretty excited for Spring. I still have some ideas to hash out. I am starting a gardening journal that I will post about later. How about you? Are you getting excited for Spring?

  3. Call me crazy, but I am not a huge fan of fresh green beans. Neither is my hubby or kids.

  4. Whoa, that's EXACTLY what I was thinking about today too! I just scheduled a post about it for tomorrow actually! I'll have to pay attention to how you do it. I've only done a few plants in the past. Hope things are going well!

  5. I've been making my garden lists and plans already too! Mark was telling me the other day he heard something about a seed shortage and how we may want to buy our seeds early to make sure we get what we want. So I've been planning and listing too!

I'm hoping to get a pear and apple tree this year and maybe my new thing to try will be a potato bed. We'll see. Thinking spring sure helps to survive this winter!
