Our First Egg!

Drew happily showing off our long awaited egg.

Yesterday morning while checking on the birds I found our first egg! The egg was actually laying right inside the door. You can see this Buff came in while we were confiscating it. I am not sure if she was the layer or not. I am not sure which one of these hens was the first prize winner. I knew the pullet eggs would be small. I didn't realize how small. Here it is compared to a regular egg.This is the first of many hopefully and I am so excited! Oh and by the way, I found another egg today!

  2. Yeah that is so exciting. They are smaller but taste so yummy. Congrats. On a side note have you ever made a homemade insecticde for your garden? We have bugs terriblyin one of our gardens. We have been using something called seven. But the chemicals bother me. Didn't know if you have one to recommend.

  3. Hi Jenni,
    I haven't used anything on my garden for bugs. I need to research it though because I am getting bugs eating my raspberry leaves. I will look into it further and let you know if I come up with anything. Thanks!

  4. Ok Jeni, I just looked it up because I thought maybe I should get on this right away! I read a few different options. Here is one I think I will try.

    Add 1 Tablespoon of canola oil with a few drops of liquid soap, not detergent, to 1 quart of water. Spray on plant as well as under leaves. Reapply after it rains.

    The other one I might try if this is not successful is, adding 2 teaspoons of crushed cloves to 1 quart of water. Spray plant and underneath leaves.

    Let me know if you try something and it works!

  7. Hot weather can turn them "off". They do ramp up egg production in the beginning and every chicken will be different. Yes, eggs will also get larger as the hen matures.

    We have one hen that lays twice a day. One hen that lays "twins" (double yolk eggs) They are so large that they won't sit nice in an XX-large egg crate.

    Does the hen house include a shelf for nesting? And do they have a nesting material (straw) on the shelf/box?? Our hens actually STOPPED giving eggs when one of the kids grabbed the nesting box out of the hen house and forgot to put it back. {why? I don't know...}

    Hubby went to check on the chickens after 2 days without eggs (kids job to collect) and he noticed that the ladies didn't have a place to nest. Recovered it and put it back in their home and we are right back up in egg production to 3 or 4 a day from 3 hens.
