Chicken Tractor

Here is the chicken tractor hubby built for me. Doesn't it look great? He did a really good job.

The kids enjoyed helping me paint. It has been so hot the last couple weeks so we did all the building inside the garage. We have to do a few modifications because it doesn't move real well on the grass. I think we are going to have to put some bigger wheels on or possible fence in the bottom so that when we lift it up the birds don't escape through the bottom. The other problem I am having is it is a bit heavy for me. Once I am out of my delicate state I don't think it will be much of a problem.

This allows me to get them out of their permanent run and onto some new grass.

The pen is about 10ft long. We used 12 ft boards to make the handles. The end is enclosed with a nesting box in the corner in case one of the hens feels the need to lay an egg while they are in there. I also put up one roosting post.I could let them free range but since my backyard isn't enclosed I get a little nervous with them just roaming around when I am not outside with them. Also, we have lots of predators around that could get them. Having the tractor will keep them safe while allowing them fresh grass and bugs.

  2. That's totally great!! I've been having to take turns each day to let my dogs loose or let the chickens roam. I love the tractor! Did you find the plans online?
