Wild Plums

The kids and I were out hiking and I found a good selection of what I thought at the time were wild plums. Turns out after a little research online I was right. I have heard of them but never seen them before, at least not that I recognized. It looked like some of the trees were ripe and ready to be picked. Here are a few I brought home. Most of them though were not ripe. I will have to keep my eye on these little treasures.

  1. Those look great! I love finding free food in the wild. The park down the street has wild blackberries all around it. Once a week or so we pick all we can reach, they are so good.

  2. We live in SE Iowa and have dozens of wild plum trees on our property! This year is a good year for them....every other year or so seems to be a good year, alternating with hardly any the year after. If you can get your hands on a steamer juicer, its a cinch to extract the juice and make plum jelly. You don't have to get the pits out then......
