Chickens

The chickens have been enjoying the weather recently. I can't imagine having these girls last Winter. I think we had snow on the ground for the entire season. Thankfully we had snow right around Christmas and then most of it melted off. The temps have been in the 30's so I have been able to let them out to roam around the yard. Here they are last night. These birds have been alot hardier than I thought they would be. I am really glad I chose the breeds I did. And they have been wonderful layers. So much so that I have even been making a few dollars here and there selling eggs. I am still getting 6-8 eggs a day.

  1. What types of breeds do you have? I have a mixed batch of Barred Rocks, Americaunas, Buff Orpingtons, Black Stars and even a Polish. We don't get snow, but my girls hate the rain and hail and go in their house when it gets really nasty out.

  2. That's a bunch of happy hens. Is the Columbian pattern hen a Brahma? She sure is pretty. You're doing a good job to get that kind of egg production in winter. We have lots of snow here all winter and our chickens are in the barn.

  3. You are really making me want chickens! You are so lucky they are still producing in the winter. I really wish egg source had them in winter, but it is colder up here and we do get more snow. I just spent about $3.50 on organic free range eggs at HyVee. :(

  4. I have 3 Buffs, 3 Plymouth Rocks and 3 Light Brahmas. All are good natured. They definitely hate the snow. They don't like stepping in it and refuse to leave the house if the ground is covered.

All about us, it is crazy how much eggs are going up. I guess all groceries are going up in cost unfortunately.
