I had to go to Tractor Supply this morning to get some chicken food. I was bummed to see that the bags went up $1.oo. I now pay $14.19 a bag. I will be happy when they can get out more and graze in the yard. That will make the food last a little bit longer.

They had big basins of new baby chicks. The kids and I oooed and ahhhed at them. They were so tiny and cute. Makes me wish we could get some more. I have heard that it can be difficult to join new birds to an existing flock so I think I will wait till next year and then get a new batch.

I haven't had any more problems with the hens. They seem to be doing really well and enjoying the warmer temperatures.

  2. One of my fondest childhood memories was going with my Grandpa to get new chicks every year. I loved it and they are so cute! You are doing a wonderful thing by exposing your kids to new things. Keep up the awesome work!

  3. I always add new chickens to the remainder of my old flock every year. With small numbers of chicks, it would be much easier. I brood them in the house and basement until they are old enough to be outside. Then I put the new chickens in a pen outside during the day for a while. I put the pen with the new chickens in the chicken house at night for a few days and outside during the day. Finally, I put the new chickens in their pen at night in the chicken house and leave the door to the pen open. This way the old ones get used to the new chickens and accept them.

  4. I second what Patti said. That's how we do it for new chicks, but we've even added full grown hens and a second rooster to our flock and then a duck. The roosters get cranky at first, but the hens are all cool.

  6. Yes, do! That way, if you have any more losses you won't have to wait another year for new layers.
