Do-It-Yourself Homemade Holiday Decorations

Our family went to the tree farm last weekend and cut down our own Christmas tree. The kids were so excited to get home and decorate it. We aren't too fancy. Simple multicolored lights and a small silver star for the top. The kids each have their own box of ornaments that they can put on.

Most of our ornaments are homemade. The kids have made some at school, craft projects we've done at home, as well as gifts from family. Each ornament has a memory to go along with it. I love that part of decorating the tree.

The tree seemed a lot bigger once we got it home and up in the living room. We soon discovered that our little silver star was going to get lost on the top of that big tree. So the kids and I decided to make a new star.

We cut a star out of a piece of cardboard and the younger boys helped paint it yellow. once the paint dried we decided to make it sparkly so we used a glue stick and added some glitter. We used an empty toilet paper roll and hot glued it to the back of the star so that we could slide the star on a branch at the top of the tree and have it stay in place.Once it was all dry we placed it on top of the tree. It looks way better than our old store bought star. We added some of our own homemade garland as well.

  1. We have not actually made our own Christmas ornaments yet, but I think my son is finally old enough to really appreciate it. I have been looking around for ideas and am hoping to do a big craft day along with cookie baking soon!

  2. I understand some families like to have the tree-cutting tradition, but why not save money along with saving a tree and get a fake christmas tree that you can use year after year after year? When they go on clearance you can get a nice one for a great deal.
