Stocking up on Bananas

Look what I picked up from my local grocery store last night. 2 bags full of $.99 bananas. Looks like I will be baking bread this weekend. What I don't use this weekend I will peel, divide into bags, and pop in the freezer for future baking and smoothies.

Here is my banana bread recipe if your interested.

Banana Bread

Ingredients
1 3/4 cup flour
2/3 coup sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup ripe mashed banana
1/3 cup shortening, margarine or butter
2 T of milk
2 eggs
1/4 chopped nuts (optional)

In lg bowl combine 1 cup of the flour and all other dry ingredients. Add mashed banana, milk and butter. Mix well with electric mixer for 2 minutes. Add remaining flour and eggs. Mix till blended.

Pour into greased loaf pan and bake 350 for 55 minutes.

  3. I've only recently allowed myself to start eating bananas again - climate guilt, you know. But I read that you can make a mulch from the peels that keeps the aphids off of your broccoli & kale, so that's my excuse. And it turns out, I LOVE them. Plus, having finally ventured to the dentist after... um... 15 years of avoiding it, I've discovered that when one has polished teeth, bananas don't give you tooth sweaters! Now if I could only find a deal like that one!

  4. I wonder if my Fareway does this? I'm going to check. Is it only at night? I hate buying green bananas anyway. You have to wait for them to ripen.

  5. Heidi-
It doesn't hurt to check. It's not always at night. I have found them all different times. Mondays might be good since they sometimes go brown after being closed on Sunday. Sometimes if the bananas are starting to brown up and they aren't bagged, I will ask a clerk if they will put some in a bag for me. They have done this before too.

  10. I LOVe that you can store bananas in the freezer. Bananas are $1.69 a pound at my local Whole Foods. I haven't checked the prices elsewhere yet...I didn't buy them...but I might if they're still available later this week. Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather :)
