Energy Tips for Using Your Dryer

While line drying is the most energy efficient option for drying your clothes, sometimes that isn't always possible or convenient.

Here are some ways to save a little money while still using your dryer.

First shorten the time you dry your clothes. New machines come with built in moisture control settings that automatically turn off when the clothes are dry. If your machine doesn't have this then you can test run a load to see how long it takes to get dry. I used to just throw my clothes in the dryer and turn it to 80 min. Now I know that it takes about 40 minutes to dry most loads.

Don't overload your dryer. This can make your dryer work harder.

Clean the lint screen after each load.

Dry one load right after the other to make use of residual heat.

Have any other suggestions? Please feel free to share.

Prepaid Vacations

My family and I just got back from a weeks vacation in Minnesota where we stayed in a cabin, bought groceries for the week, rented a paddle boat, shopped, and even splurged and ate dinner at a steak house all without even dipping into our current bank account. Our vacation was completely paid for. We came home with the same amount of money that we left with!

Here is how we did it and how you can too.

First, figure out what your vacation is likely to cost and when you plan to take it. For us, I budgeted $1600. I knew our vacation was being taken in July. I would need 8 months to save. In November I started putting $200 each month into a separate savings account (I used an online account, earning a higher interest rate. You might as well make your vacation fund grow faster by earning higher rates!). Having it in a separate account, I never saw the money, therefore resisting the urge to spend it.

When July came I had the $1600 already saved up. I transferred the money to my regular savings. For us, what worked was withdrawing part of it and using our debit for the rest. Other options would be to withdraw the entire amount and pay everything with cash. This way you know exactly what you have to spend.

Another option would be you could pay for your entire vacation on one credit card then just use the money you have in your savings to pay off your credit card when the bill comes due. Be careful doing this though you want to make sure you don't go over what you have budgeted and you want to pay the bill as soon as you receive it so you don't accumulate interest and late fees.

By being able to plan and have your vacation already paid for it will give you peace of mind and you can avoid any guilty feelings about overspending.

Help Yourself Get Out of Debt

When my husband and I first decided to get all of our debt paid off we sat down and made a comprehensive list of all the places we owed money. On this list we made note of the name, the total amount owed, the minimum payment due each month, and the interest rate.

Now while there are several ways to pay off your debts the way we choose to start paying off our debts was to pay off the debt with the lowest balance first. Or the debt snowball as Dave Ramsy calls it.

What helped the most was having all of our debts written out in front of us on one sheet of paper. It gave us a breakdown of all of our payments and amounts owed and we knew exactly were we stood financially.

This is definitely what worked for us at helping us get on a path to becoming debt free. For more works for me Wednesday check out We are That Family.

The Little Things

I am pretty excited about this little guy.
This is my first year planting watermelon. I have been wondering if and when I would get something on the never ending vines that have been creeping up my rows in the garden. Finally after coming home from spending the weekend at my in-laws I came home to this! And the best part? I found 4 more just like it!

I love having my own garden. It makes me so excited to check out there each day to see what has changed and what has grown overnight. It truly is amazing.

A Walk Through My Garden

I am pretty proud of my garden this year. I have been working really hard to take care of it and keep the weeds down. So far, (fingers crossed) I haven't had too many issues. Here are my tomato plants. The oldest plants have gotten blight really bad. I haven't invested in any chemicals to treat them. So far they are still blooming and I actually have tomatoes on them as you can see from the picture below. I have 7 plants that I put in the early Spring and 5 smaller plants I put in within the last couple weeks. I am hoping the smaller ones don't get the disease. Here are my green bell peppers. The peppers that are on there now are about ready to be picked. I also have red bells and an unbelievable amount of hot peppers. My hubby is a huge salsa fan and makes his own so we have quite the variety of hot peppers growing. Here is my lettuce. I have been eating lettuce for a couple weeks straight now. I planted leaf lettuce and head lettuce. The head lettuce never formed heads. It just came out as leaves. Both have been really great to eat. This is my watermelon vines. I have 3 plants here. They are now finally getting blooms on them. I was starting to wonder. Hopefully now they will get pollinated. My peas have done well for what I have to work with. I haven't gotten alot of them. The deer have enjoyed them as well unfortunately. I didn't get very many that germinated so my crop is very low. What I did get were very sweet and you could eat them right off the vine. Just what I was hoping for.My onions are also thriving. I planted white and red onions this year. I have 4 cantaloupe plants. All seem to be vining nicely. I had to trim a few back already. There are lots of blooms and a few little starts of melons.I didn't get a good picture of the cucumbers. They are a little strange this years. They keep curling around themselves and I have to try and untangle them without breaking the vines. I have never had this problem before. It is very unusual. I do have cucumbers though. One is already about 6 inches long. Not much longer and I will be able to add it to my fresh lettuce salad!
