No Spend Challenge Kick Off

Today marks the kick off to our no spend challenge for the month of September. To recap my goals for the month are...

1. Keep grocery budget to $200 for the month.
2. Entertainment budget to $40 for the month.
3. No eating out.
4. Eat from the pantry and freezer. I would love to get to the bottom of my freezer so that I can defrost it at the end of the month.
5. No shopping unless absolutely necessary!

Each Friday I will be posting about how I did for the week. I will also add a Mr. Linky so that anyone who is joining me on this challenge can link up and share how they did for the week as well.

Good luck everyone. Happy Saving!

Printing Photos

This is a guest post written by Tracy who blogs at http://tracyannephotography.blogspot.com/
Thank you Tracy!

I’m addicted. Some would say I have a problem. Why? I have roughly 5,962 photos on my computer… and that’s only the last two years. An avid scrapbooker, I take hundreds of photos. As a professional photographer I take thousands more.

When it comes to my personal scrapbooking photos, I’m always looking for the best deal on prints. I can’t see spending a lot of money when I’m going to crop, trim and embellish them. My high-quality prints are framed and hanging on my wall.

Through the years I’ve compared several photo processing places and thought I’d share my learnings with all of you. All prices are for standard 4x6 prints.

Snapfish.com: 9 cents a piece (first 20 uploaded are free)

Walmart.com: 9 cents a piece (and they deliver to your house!)
Also offer one hour in-store pick up.

Shutterfly.com: 15 cents a piece (first 25 uploaded are free)

Kodak Gallery.com: 15 cents a piece (first 20 uploaded are free)
Join their Gallery Premier Print Plan and pay only 10 cents a piece

Walgreens.com: 19 cents a piece (less than 99 prints) 15 cents a piece (100 prints or more)

Target.com: Price varies: prints at KodakGallery, Shutterfly or PhotoBucket
My question – why go through Target at all when you can go straight to the printers they use?

They all offer various photo products (collages, posters, canvases, t-shirts, coffee cups, ect), different finishes (matte vs glossy), and different means of distribution (home delivery, in-store pick up, ect). Once you know the price points, it really comes down to personal preference.

Happy photographing!

My Great Garage Sale Finds!

Have I told you how much I love to go to garage sales? I love the fall weather but it makes me sad to see the garage sales dwindling down. The kids and I headed out early this morning. I didn't get alot of stuff but I did get a couple great bargains.

The greatest bargain was a Nike winter coat and hat for son #3. Paid $1.50, has a rust spot on the front of the coat, other than that no tears or holes.
6 pairs of play pants and jeans for son #3. All in great condition. $.25 each
2 water bottles I pulled out of the free box. I bought these exact same water bottles at Target when we joined the YMCA last year and they were $5!!

Total for all these items $3.00.

Do I Really Need This?

For some reason staying within the limits of the budget lately has been really difficult. On paper it looks pretty. We should be able to put a large chunk towards savings each month. However at the end of the month the money is not always exactly where it should be. The categories that got me this month?

Groceries
Clothes
Entertainment
School Activities/Supplies

Ok, groceries. I did stock up a little. Although my pantry isn't looking very impressive. I really am not sure how I spent all $500 so quickly this month.

Clothes. I did get Will and myself some new clothes this month. He was needing some new work shirts and I was really wanting some new lounge pants. I did use some leftover Christmas money. Jake needed new football cleats at $50 a pop, Tony needed gym shoes and regular shoes because his were too small.

Entertainment. We splurged on eating out alot this month. Plus we took a trip to the Omaha Zoo.

School Activities. I had to buy supplies, pay fees, and buy Tony's band instrument. That pretty much killed my budget for the year!

{{{Sigh}}}So I am sitting here asking myself...did I really need all this? The answer. No, not all of it for sure. Probably not most of it. Staying within the limits of your budget can be very challenging sometimes. Sometimes all it takes is asking yourself "Do I really need this?" By asking yourself this question before making a purchase quite often the answer will probably be "no".

It's your money and your responsibility on how you spend it. No one can take that away from you. When you go to buy something stop and ask yourself "do I really need this?". If it is something you want and need and it fits in your budget then go for it. If not, then learn how to say "no".

Our Garden Update

Our garden is still doing great! This is what I picked on Tuesday night. Cantaloupe anyone? My cantaloupe this year are doing awesome! So far I think my number is up to somewhere around 36 melons so far. The vines are dying off now, but there are still a few left out there. The cucumbers have also been producing like crazy. I have never had so many before. I have been giving them away by the dozens. The bell peppers are still coming on thick and I am excited because the red bells are finally starting to turn red! The tomatoes and hot peppers are still producing well. My watermelon seems to be growing still I am just waiting for it to fall off the vines. Probably sometime next month for that. I am even getting a few strawberries still here and there.

September~No Spend Month

Well I have declared that September will be a no spend month for our household. What does this mean? Well back in January we did a 30 Days of Nothing Challenge, it won't be quit that severe! My goals for this month are the following.

1. I would like to keep my grocery budget to $200 for the month. That is $300 below what I normally budget. I want to eat out of the pantry as much as possible. My freezer is very well stocked right now and I need to eat everything that is on the BOTTOM!! Sticking to the meal plan is very important.
2. We budget $140 for Entertainment, I would like to keep that at $40. That averages $10 per week.
3. We won't be purchasing anything unless we absolutely have to. No clothes, no eating out.
4. With the kids back in school it will be easier to keep lights off and the thermostat turned up to save on energy. I have already been hanging 90% of the laundry.

I will be checking in weekly to give you an update on how we did for the week. I feel like if I blog about it, it will hold me more accountable. I really want to save some money this month.

What about you? Care to join in with me? There are no rules. You can list your own goals for the month. I will set up a Mr. Linky if I get enough people involved and we can all check in and see how we did. Let me know if you want to join!

Walgreens Deals Week of 8/23-8/29

I am also going to be sending you elsewhere for the Walgreens match-ups this week. A Thrifty Mom has a pretty good list. Honestly I haven't shopped at Walgreens much since they did away with the rebates. I did get a $3 coupon off a $15 purchase when I picked up a Rx the other day, so I may have to check out the deals for the week. Thanks Sarah!

Target Deals Week of 8/23-8/29

Since I am so late on getting the match-ups done for this week I am going to send you over to Being Frugal is Fabulous for her list. I will try and be more on the ball next week! Thanks Nicole!
I am severely lacking on deals and posting I know. Our first day of school started today. With preparing for school and now I have a sick kiddo I have been pushing the blog to the back burner.

I will get the Target, Walgreens and Fareway match-ups done later today. Now that school is back in session I have lost 50% of my children for 8 hours of the day! They were such great helpers I am sad to see them head back to school. I am hoping to settle down into some sort of schedule and get back into my own routine.

Thanks for being patient with me.

Swapping Fruits and/or Vegetables

One way to save money on produce, besides having your own garden is to have a fruit or vegetable swap. If you are having a bumper crop of tomatoes but not producing any peppers why not swap with someone who would be willing to trade?

Trading with neighbors, relatives or even posting on sites such as Craigslist are all options that could be considered.

I know I have lots of hot peppers, anyone have anything they want to trade?!

My First Watermelon From the Garden!

Here is a picture of the first watermelon of the season from my garden. This is the first year growing melon for me. I was a little early in picking it, but it was still really sweet and we have all enjoyed it! I still have about 4 more on there but they have quit awhile before they look like they will be ripe.

Stocking Up on Next Year's School Supplies

I got an email from a reader with this great tip.

So I was reading my town's newspaper & this lady
had a genius idea. She said when she does her
school shopping she picks up the list for next
years grade and buys supplies when they are clearenced
and then shops in her closet the following year before
going school shopping. I just thought it was a brilliant
idea and maybe you'd want to pass it along.

Thanks Tracy for sharing this tip!

Teaching Kids Good Spending Habits

I know I have seriously lacked in teaching good spending habits with my older children early in their childhood. I do think that I am doing a much better job now then I have in the past. Thankfully I have one child who is a natural saver but the other spends money before it even hits his hands. My younger two children are just learning about money, so I have been doing a little reading and have found some good tips about teaching children about money.

First help your children learn the value of money at an early age. Talk to your child about how many hours you may have to work to buy that new video game or Lego set. Or, if they are older and have part time jobs, how many hours they would have to work to earn the item.

It is ok to include your children in on discussions about the family finances so that everyone can help take part in making goals and watching spending. However, if you are really having financial trouble go easy on the details so your kids are not worried. You do need to be honest and tell your kids you cannot afford something they ask for if it is not in the budget.

To instill good decision making about money into your kids include them in the decision making process. Help them weigh out the pros and cons of making a new purchase. Take them with you to the grocery store and compare prices. Show them how to save money by using coupons and reading labels. Also take them with you to garage sales and thrift stores so they can see how far you can stretch your money.

Remember to set a good frugal example for your kids. Just as with others areas in life your kids are watching you and follow your lead.

How do you teach your kids about money?

Harvest

Here is a picking from my garden. From this we made 8 pints of salsa. We still had enough peppers to freeze 4 pint size bags. Now I just have to wait for more tomatoes to rippen. I think we will definitely have enough salsa to keep us warm this winter!

Menu Plan Monday

Here is what is on the menu for us this week.

Monday...Spaghetti and peaches
Tuesday...Pulled pork sandwiches, watermelon and carrots
Wednesday...Shish kabobs and watermelon
Thursday...Tacos
Friday...Steak, sweet corn, and fruit salad

Pretty easy. What is on your menu? To get other ideas, visit I'm an Organizing Junkie.
