Home Hair Cuts

One way to save a few extra dollars is to cut your own hair. Thankfully I have boys so buzz cuts are always an option!

Otherwise check around for coupons. If you aren't picky about where you cut your hair you can usually find a coupon to some place. I have found coupons on the back of grocery receipts, in the phone book, and in the newspaper. Most of the coupons are good for $2-$3 off a haircut.

Menu Plan Monday

Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. Here is what is on our menu for the week.

Monday...Turkey (no we haven't had enough!), mashed potatoes, gravy, corn and homemade dinner rolls.
Tuesday...Grilled steaks, broccoli, and fruit.
Wednesday...Creamed turkey over homemade biscuits and corn.
Thursday...Meatloaf, greenbeans, blueberry muffins and fruit.
Friday...Grilled cheese sandwiches, tomato soup, Jello.

For other menu ideas head over to Organizing Junkie.

This Weeks Deals

Due to the holiday week and dealing with a sick child I won't be posting this weeks deals.

For Walgreens, you can head over to Money Saving Mom for her list of match-ups.

For Target, you can head over to Stretching a Buck.

I haven't seen any deals out on the blogoshere for Hy-Vee yet. Looks like Fareways ad is light this week. Leave a comment if you see something worth sharing!

$1.00 off Coffee Mate Creamers

You can go here to print $1.00 coupons for Coffee Mate Creamer. Now is the time they will be on sale. This week Walgreens has them buy one for $2.49 get one free, so if you print the coupon twice you can get 2 creamers for $.49.

Stocking Up on Baking Supplies

During the holidays is the best time to stock up on baking supplies. Right now you can find rock bottom sales on most baking items. Try and remember that not only will you need these items around the holidays but you will also need them for the months ahead. If possible try and stock up now while the prices are cheap. I have seen 5lb bags of flour anywhere from $.88-$.99 the last few weeks. Usually flour is over $2 a bag. Sugars have also been on sale. This week I also stocked up on some free spices. Chocolate chips have been on sale lately, match those up with a coupon and you get a pretty sweet deal.

Let's not forget about those turkeys. Right now is the cheapest time to buy a turkey. Last week one of our local stores had turkeys for $.22 lb. That means you could get a 10lb bird for $2.20! That alone would feed our family of 6 three meals! Talk about a cheap dinner. Instead of getting just one turkey for your holiday dinner, if you have the freezer space why not pick up 2 or 3. A nice homemade turkey dinner would be really good come January.

If space and money allow, now is the best time to stock up on all the great deals going on. Don't forget to check your stores for after Thanksgiving clearance deals too. last year I picked up really cheap turkeys (3 of them) and I also picked up canned pumpkin for really cheap. In fact I had enough pumpkin to last me all year. I will be using the last of it to make this years pumpkin bars. Hopefully I will find it on clearance again to stock up again for next year!

Homemade Birthday Cake

I've talked about this before, but one way we save money at our house is to make our own birthday cakes. My youngest just turned 3 years old. Here is the cake I made for him.
I tried my first attempt at homemade buttercream frosting. It was pretty good, although the transfer didn't turn out so well so I had to redo part of it. Here is the recipe I used for the frosting.

ButterCream Frosting
1 cup Crisco
3 sticks of Butter
2 tsp. vanilla
2 lb bag of powdered sugar

Cream butter and Crisco together, add vanilla and blend. Slowly add powdered sugar and beat with mixer till smooth consistency.

Going Over or Staying Under Budget

In my previous budgeting post I talked about the different categories we use for our budget. Each category is given a specific dollar amount. But, what happens if I go over or under that amount for the month? Well here is what I do.

We will use our School Supplies/Activities category for an example. We budget $65 each month for this category during the months the kids are in school. If I go under that amount, and say we only use $45 one month then that extra $20 gets rolled over to my savings account at the end of the month. I have a seperate savings account where I keep all of our money that is already allocated to a certain category. I have another Excel document where I keep track of those categories and their balances.

If I go over the amount that is budgeted, hopefully there is money in that category that is unused from previous months in Savings that can be transferred over. If not, which frequently happens then you just have to cut from other categories in your budget. Or maybe less money will be transferred over to Savings at the end of the month.

Discovery Toys Motorworks Review and Giveaway!

I was excited when Krista contacted me to do a review of a Discovery Toys product. I was even more excited when this arrived in the mail. Discovery Toys Motorworks. This junior mechanic set comes with a screwdriver, a working power tool (requiring 2 AA batteries), and all the parts to build three vehicles. The vehicles include a race car, prop plane and motorcycle. Also included are a toolbox to keep everything in, manual, extra tool bit and extra screws. This toy is recommended for children 4 years and up.

You can see the full company description here.

My kids have had an absolute blast with this toy. We have been playing with it daily since receiving it. It is very easy for them to manipulate. The screws go in and out easily and they both love the power tool! My 4-year-old spends a lot of time sorting out the different colored of screws into piles and then tries to figure out which pieces go to which vehicle. He is completely content sitting there putting the vehicles together and then taking them apart. I love that it comes with a toolbox to keep everything in. There are lots of little pieces, so this toy is not recommended for children under 3 due to this reason. I was very impressed with the sturdiness of the product as well. My kids have put the vehicles together, driven them all around the house, taken them back apart, and put them back together again. They are surely going to get a lot of wear around this house!

My overall impression of this toy is a good one. The toy seems tough to break which is a good thing around our house. The toy teaches order of operation, following instructions, color matching, and helps develop hand eye coordination. These things hit the learning stage my 4 year old is in right now. As I said above this toy keeps his attention for a long time. My (soon to be) 3 year old enjoys the toy on a different level. I think he is a little too busy for it right now, but he loves the tools and playing with the cars when they are put together. I would recommend this toy if your child is in the same stage my 4 year old is in as it appears to be a well built toy that helps development and is fun to play with.

If you are interested in this product for your own little one you can visit Krista at www.ToysAreGreat.com. There you can read more about Discovery Toys products, opportunities or view their catalog where you will find this great toy.

Our Budget System

Since it is the beginning of a new month, I just finished up revising my November budget. At the end of each month I always review our monthly budget and see how we did. Then I look at the following months budget and make changes where needed so that everything adds up.

I keep my budget on the computer. We use an Excel document that my husband set up for me. I just go in and type in the numbers and it figures all the math. I love it!

We budget using the Zero-Based budgeting method. This means at the end of the month we end up with zero dollars. All our money is allocated to a specific category. This has worked very well for us. Here are the categories for our budget.

Housing
Rent
Phone, Directv, Internet (all on one bill)
Electricity and Gas
Water
Garbage
Maintenance

Transportation
Insurance
Taxes and Tags
Fuel
Maintenance

Food
Groceries

Children

School Lunch
School Supplies/Activities
Allowance

Personal Care
Prescription/Co-Pays
Haircuts
Clothing
AMA Dues

Entertainment
General Fun Fund
Will Allowance
Sara Allowance
Vacation Fund

Loans
Student Loan

Gifts/Donations/Holidays

Savings

You will want to categorize your budget in a way that works for your family. In my next post I will talk about what I do with the money that is allocated for a specific category when we go over the budgeted amount or stay under.
