Homemade Birthday Cake

One way we save money on birthdays is by making our own birthday cakes. This not only saves us money but has also become a tradition in our family. The kids are always excited to see what kind of cake I can come up with.

I made this cake for my sons birthday today. He turned 4. His request was a monkey cake with chocolate chips. I used regular store bought cake mix and frosting. The dark frosting is chocolate and the lighter frosting is vanilla that I tinted with brown coloring. I used chocolate chips for the eyes, nostrils and mouth.

Total cost of the cake, roughly $3.00.

Menu Plan Monday

Monday...Tacos and watermelon.
Tuesday...Stir fry, using peppers from the garden and peaches.
Wednesday...Steak, plain spaghetti noodles, corn, grilled bread (per sons request, it's his 4th birthday!)
Thursday...Fish fry, corn bread, fried potatoes.
Friday...Leftovers.

To see what others are having this week visit I'm an Organizing Junkie.

Free Redbox Codes

Here are a few Redbox codes worth trying out. I am not sure when they expire. Let me know if you try them and they work for you.

  • 9HB6MP22 – valid at all Redbox kiosks
  • SMR8DVD – valid only at McDonalds
  • 9H2VEE27- valid only at Hy-Vee

Reducing Your Water Usage

Conserving water usage can save you money. While my water bill isn't my most expensive utility, I have noticed it creeping up over the last few months . It has made me sit back and take a look at some of the things I can do to bring it back down.

Time your showers...Everyone loves a nice, long, relaxing shower. Most especially me. Implement a time limit on the shower. Set a timer in the bathroom. When it goes off the water needs to be off.

Turn off the water when you don't need it...Try not to leave the water on while brushing your teeth or shaving. When rinsing off dishes, instead of running the water full blast, before dinner fill the sink with water and then just dip the dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

Put in low-flow shower heads and faucets...These units use less water while still maintaining the pressure. We actually had an energy audit from our utility company last year and he put these in for free.

Fix dripping faucets and leaking toilets...Even these small leaks can add up to wasted water and larger bills.

Check outside faucets, sprinklers and hoses...These items need to be checked and maintained as well. Since we don't use them as often leaky faucets can go unseen for weeks or months.

Invest in making rain barrels to water your garden or flowers...Instead of paying to water your garden why not recycle rain water? This past Spring we made these rain barrels and have used them to water our vegetable garden. Only a handful of times have we actually had to use the outside hose.

No Spend Challenge Update

This was a long week for me. We still did good not spending any extra money. We finally broke into the $40 entertainment money and rented a movie from Redbox. I also used that money to pay $7 for our admission to my sons football game Tuesday night. Hubby did spend $30 of his birthday money to buy a new game.

Other than regular bills, gas, a birthday gift and paying for our vehicle tax and license no other money was spent. I spent about $50 on groceries so I have $41 left for the rest of the month.

I used my dryer all week because the weather was either rainy or humid and I was feeling lazy. I felt a little guilty about that. I did however get some tomatoes canned, lots of bell peppers diced and frozen and more applesauce made. That made me feel pretty good.

How did your week go? Leave a link to your post below. Don't forget to link back to my page.

Gardening Update

My garden is still producing well. Thankfully we got some much needed rain the other day. My garden got a good drink and my rain barrels are full again. Here is what I picked this morning. I also had 2 additional watermelon that are not in the picture. I brought them in and cut into them to see if they were ripe. They were, thankfully.I also canned 11 quarts of tomatoes Monday night. I am happy to have this done. This will be great when Winter comes. Fresh tomatoes for chili and stews are the best!

No Spend Challenge Update

Well, we are over half way through the month. Things have been going pretty well. We haven't bought anything ridiculous. We did have a few extra expenses this week. Thankfully they were all for things that I already had money set aside for. For example we purchased school pictures this week. This was $21 for each child. I have a separate fund for "school activities/expenses" so this was already covered. Also hubby needed new windshield wipers for his car, this was covered under the "car maintenance" fund. Also, my hairdryer broke. It's always something.

I did feel the urge to want to spend this week. I really want to box in my strawberry beds, but I feel good that I am maintaining control and not running out and buying the wood just because I want it.

Today the kids and I went garage saling. Something I do every Friday. It was hard to say no, so I ended up spending a little extra money. I did however resist the incredible urge to want to stop at McDonald's and get a fry for a snack. We sometimes get a snack or lunch there on Fridays. I drove right by today.

We spent about $43 on groceries for the week. Hubby had to stop and get some food before going to a football party last weekend so he spent about $18. That wasn't really planned. I really wanted to stock up on some good sales this week but am not going to because I know I really need to eat what we have on hand right now.

I have $91 left for groceries this month.

Dehydrating Food

Another good way to preserve your food is by dehydration. This is a good alternative to canning if you don't have the supplies or time to can. Dehydrated foods also take up less space and is easy to store.

There are many ways to dehydrate your own food. You can use your oven, commercial dehydrator or the sun. We borrowed a dehydrator from a co-worker of Will's. We have been very pleased with the results so far.

To prepare your foods for dehydration first select the best fruits and veggies (or meat if your drying meat) without bruises or bad spots. Make sure the produce is washed well before drying.

When prepping whatever it is that you are drying, for example apples, make sure all your pieces are cut the same size. This way they will all dry at the same speed.

Some fruits, such as apples and bananas need to be treated before dehydrating to prevent browning. You can dip them in lemon juice or ascorbic acid (FruitFresh).

Depending on your method of drying, the size of your pieces and what you are dehydrating, times will vary. You can follow this general guideline here.

Allow your food to cool before packaging. With fruit, allow it to "condition" for 4-10 days before storing it.

Store dehydrated food in air tight Ziplock bags or jars. Store in a cool, dark, dry place for up to 6-12 months.

No Spend Challenge Update

This week went really well again for us with our no spend challenge. I have maganged to do really well not buying anything. I spent about $46 at the grocery store last night. My total for the month is $66, leaving me about $134 left.

This was a tough week for me too. Both hubby and I were sick for part of the week so it was really hard to not cave and get fast food a couple nights for dinner. We stuck to the menu though and ate at home each night.

Our garden is doing great so we have been lucky to eat fresh cantaloupe, watermelon, tomatoes and peppers everyday. We were blessed with an abundance of apples so I have been busy making applesauce. My step mother has also supplied us with many tomatoes to go along with our peppers so hubby and I made another large batch of homemade salsa tonight that I will can this weekend.

Other than gas, another prescription and our regular utilities no other money was spent this week except for some money that I keep stashed for myself that I spent garage saling this morning!

How did your week go? Leave a link to your post below. Don't forget to link back to my page!

Plan for the Unexpected

It is impossible to know what problems lie around the corner. A car will break down, the dryer stops working, you may need an unexpected surgery. All of these things are unplanned. Having an emergency fund set aside can make all of these difficulties seem a little easier to manage.

Dave tells you to have a $1000 emergency fund. We follow this rule and it has come in handy many times. Remember, if you take money out of it, make sure you replace it.

Saving a certain percentage of your paycheck each month for unexpected expenses will be very beneficial in the long run. It will cause less stress and tension and will be one less thing to worry about.

Fareway Deals

Sorry I am late getting the Fareway deals up. I have been battling a migraine the last couple of days. I will try and get the match-ups put up later today. Thanks for your patience!

Homemade Applesauce

Thanks for all the tips on what to do with the apples I got! Here is the first of many batches of applesauce. It is really good.

Here is how I made my homemade applesauce.

I peeled the apples and then just cut the 4 sides off, leaving the core. Place them all into a large stock pot. I added about 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water and cooked on low for approximately 35 minutes stirring frequently so it doesn't scorch. Here is how it turned out.I did use my potato masher a few times to get the big chunks of apple to mash up a bit. I do like my applesauce a little on the chunky side so you probably could cook it for a little longer if you want it smoother.

Homegrown Watermelon

I love this time of year! We are going from eating fresh cantaloupe out of our garden everyday to eating fresh watermelon. Here is what I picked out of the garden this weekend. So sweet and delicious.

Apples!

I am trying something new today. Over the weekend I came into a very large crop of green apples. My in-laws have a neighbor who graciously let my sister-in-law and myself take as many apples off of his tree as we wanted. I came home with 7 bags full!

Now, I am experimenting with what to do with all of them. They are quite tart. So far I have tried drying them and I made one pot of applesauce. The dried apples aren't very good, they are pretty sour. The applesauce though is quite tasty. I just added some sugar. I think I am going to keep making applesauce and then I will can it later in the week.

I also plan to cut some up and freeze them for baking pies, crisps and turnovers.
