Organizing Your Cleaning Supplies and Sleepless Nights

Under my sink is where I keep all my cleaning supplies. It was such a pain to shove bottles all around looking for a certain cleaner. I fixed that problem by putting all my cleaners into this dishpan. I have one under my kitchen sink and both bathroom sinks. Now, when I need to look for something I pull out the dishpan, grab it and push it back into the cupboard! Works for me!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ok, now that I have fully read the Works for Me Wednesday post it looks like instead of giving a helpful tip, I am suppose to give you my dilemma and ask for any suggestions. This is the backwards edition of Works for Me! Once I read this I immediately knew what I wanted to ask.
How do you get a 2 year old to stay in his bed and go to sleep? My youngest has a terrible time sleeping at night. He always has. He always wants to be with me or daddy. As cute as it is, sometimes I really want him to just go to bed! We always do a routine each night. Jammies, brushing teeth and read a book. I put him down at 7:30pm and it usually isn't until at least 9pm before he falls asleep. When he does finally fall asleep he is usually in the hallway, our bedroom or laying in front of the door to his room. This picture was taken of him falling asleep on the kitchen floor! Any suggestions for helping him fall asleep and staying in his bed beside Benedryl?
Recycling - It Makes Sense
Recycling has many different advantages. Reusing the earths natural resources over and over again after it has already been extracted from the earth makes good sense doesn't it? Did you know that 80% of our trash is recyclable but only 28% is actually recycled?
Recycling helps preserve the few undamaged ecosystems we have. We need to protect these resources for future generations. Also by recycling we are keeping waste out of our landfills. These landfills pose environmental and health concerns. It costs millions of dollars to maintain these landfills.
Many communities offer a city wide curb side recycling service provided to everyone. Some cities may offer this through individual trash haulers. In these cities the service needs to be arranged by each individual residents.
Since different communities use different services, recycables that get picked up may differ. It is best to check with your local company to see what is acceptable.
Fun Facts
*Recycling creates 6 times as many jobs as landfilling
*Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 trees, 2 barrels of oil (enough to run the average car for 1,260 miles), 4,100 kilowatts of energy (enough power for the average home for 6 months), 3.2 cubic yards of landfill space, and 60 pounds of air pollution.
*Americans throw away enough aluminum to rebuild our entire commercial fleet of airplanes every 3 months.
*Recycling glass instead of making it from silica sand reduces mining waste by 70%, water use by 50%, and air pollution by 20%.
*Recycling just one aluminum can saves enough energy to operate a TV for 3 hours.
*If we recycled all of the newspapers printed in the U.S. on a typical Sunday, we would save 550,000 trees--or about 26 million trees per year.
In my community curb side recycling is picked up each week (we are switching to every 2 weeks soon). We are provided with a container to place all our recyclables in and we are in charge of putting in on the curb. We are billed a yearly fee, around $38.00.
This is what works for my family. In my home next to my trash can is my "Recycle" trash can. All paper, plastic and aluminum goes in here. Each night my son has to dump this in the large bin outside (this is part of his chores).
Recycling has reduced our trash tremendously. Plus, it makes me feel good to know that I am helping the environment.
Homemade Biscuits
I have really stepped up my game at baking from scratch. It has cost us less money to make from scratch vs buying pre-packaged foods. I also feel proud when I know that what I am eating has come from my own work. I have been on a baking kick lately and have my freezer well stocked with breads and muffins.
This week my youngest and I made homemade biscuits. They beat any store bought biscuits we've had. Very easy to make too. Here is the recipe.Buttermilk Biscuits
2 cups all purpose flour
1 T baking powder
2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup butter, shortening or margarine
3/4 cup buttermilk
In a bowl stir together all dry ingredients. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in the center. Add buttermilk and stir just till dough clings together.
On a lightly floured surface knead dough gently for 10-12 strokes. Roll or pat dough to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with biscuit cutter (or I use a glass) dipping in flour between cuts.
Place biscuits on greased baking sheet. Bake at 450 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
Makes 10-12
Here is my helper! He really was happy, just not about getting his picture taken!
Freebie Ideas and Suggestions
One suggestion that I have with signing up for free samples is to use an alternate email. This way your personal email doesn't get bogged down with unwanted junk mail. You will need to check this email though periodically because some sample company's want you to confirm your sign up with a reply to an email they sent you.
I think what I will start doing is a once a week freebies roundup. Unless I find deals that have a short expiration date or some other reason for posting immediately. This way my blog doesn't get bogged done with dozens of freebie posts. And hopefully it will make it easier for all of you to stay caught up.
What do you think? Would having one email once or twice a week be easier than having them listed as I see them? Let me know if you have any other suggestions.
Our Rain Barrels
My hubby was busy on Sunday. He finally got our rain barrels put together and they look great. I was quite impressed with his handy work. We got the barrels from a bottling company for $5 each. He watched some "how to" videos online and researched other rain barrels sites and came up with this plan to design them.The barrels are place up off the ground on cement blocks to help the water flow out. He put a flexible down spot coming off the gutter over to the barrel. At the end of the flexible gutter there is this, to trap any leaves or debris before it enters the barrel.Then he attached the two barrels together so that when the first barrel fills up, it will overflow into the second barrel. There is a spigot at the bottom of both barrels. If they both get filled up, then there is an overflow hole on the second barrel that will route the water away from the house. The pipe goes over to my flowers. Very clever.We got some rain on Monday and they worked great! They filled up very fast.
Spring Cleaning Part 2
I have all my list for the kitchen completed with the exception of the trash and recycle containers. I am saving that for a day I can get the hose out and scrub them.
*Wiping down the table and chairs.
*Cleaning the window pane and window.
*Scrub the floor.
*Clean the chandalier.
Here is the before picture. Don't you love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles blanket? We have that up over our door. We get a really bad draft. It is a terrible eye sore but what do you do?How are you doing with your Spring Cleaning?
Frugal Tip~Dryer Sheets
I haven't completely cut dryer sheets out of my life but I have cut back on buying them tremendously. I have realized that if I cut them in half they still work just as well. So now every time I open a box I take them all out, cut them in half and put them back in the box. Works for me!
Spring Cleaning is in Full Swing
I have officially started my Spring cleaning. The nice weather puts me in the mood to clean the house from top to bottom to get rid of all the Winter "yuck" that has accumulated the last 5 or so months. I love having my house clean even if it only looks nice for a few minutes! It is extremely hard to keep a tidy house with 5 boys (yes, I am counting my husband as a boy too.)
Here is my before picture...And here is my after...unfortunately it didn't look this nice for very long!Friday I got started on my kitchen. Here is the master list. The items marked in blue are done!!
Kitchen~
*Hutch
clean out the drawers
organize the shelves and cookbooks
clean top and inside
clean cookie jars
*Fridge and Freezer
clean out the inside and organize
wipe down
clean the outside
replace baking soda
*Cupboards
take everything out and
wash inside
organize
spray outside with wood oil
*Oven and Stove
Clean burners
clean oven and racks
*Microwave
*Trash can and recycle can
take outside and wash
*Floor and rugs
*Area by fridge
organize papers
I am hoping to get the rest done by Wednesday. That is my goal. Then it will be on to the next room in the house!
How about you? Are you Spring cleaning? If so, do you have a method to your madness? Feel free to leave a comment and let me know your strategy.
Free Glucerna Cereal
You can go here to sign up for a coupon for Glucerna cereal, made especially for people with diabetes. The coupon is for $5/1 which should make them free. You should be able to print them twice. You can also call 1-877-879-4857 to request another $5/1 coupon.
I have multiple people in my family who have or are at risk for diabetes so this will come in handy.
