Weekly Wrap Up
~Packed a picnic lunch for Tony's ball game on Tuesday night as well as a picnic lunch today when we visited the Science Center. That saved me from buying any concessions. (OK, at Tony's game we did buy a little snack.) But no big bucks were spent.
~I did have a really great night shopping on Tuesday. I saved over $100!
~I washed all my clothes in cold water and turned the heat cycle off the dishwasher.
~Still using and loving my cloth napkins.
~Our heat has been off now all week! I think we turned it on one morning for a couple hours to bring the temp back up to 65. I love this time of the year!
~I did get my coupon binder all cleaned out and organized today as well as getting almost all my inserts cut and filed! I have SO MANY coupons that I am having a coupon giveaway!
I did go over budget for our groceries this month. I have a very good stock pile in my pantry as well as my freezer and tons of free samples just laying around. So for the month of May I have decided to have an Eat From the Pantry Challenge. I plan to cut my grocery bill in half and try and use up what we have. Feel free to join me!
To see what others have done this week to be frugal check out Jennifer at Getting Ahead.
May Goals ~ Eat From the Pantry Challenge
So I did very bad at staying under grocery budget for the month of April. I found way too many deals to stock up on. I am officially going to state it here...MY GOAL FOR MAY IS TO CUT MY GROCERY BILL IN HALF! I have a very well stocked pantry and freezer so I am going to have an Eat From the Pantry Challenge. My grocery budget is $500 for my family of 6. This includes everything from food, cleaning supplies, bathroom necessities to diapers and wipes. I am hoping to spend about $250 for the month of May or less is possible. I am going to try and stay OUT of the grocery store unless it is for dairy, bread or produce. What do you say? Care to join in?
It is time to use up all that meat in the back of your freezer. What are you saving all those trial size samples of shampoo, deodorant and laundry soap for? Let's save some money this month and use up what we have. It is almost time for gardening again. This means those jars of pickles and tomatoes have been on the shelf for almost 1 year and need to be used up.
I would love to have you join in the "Eat From the Pantry Challenge". Leave a link to your post below. Make sure your link goes directly to your post about this challenge. Link back to my page so others can see how we are doing! I will be having weekly updates every Friday through May!

Growing Your Own Vegetables
One way to save money is to grow your own vegetables. I love having a garden. There is nothing more satisfying than eating something that came out of your own backyard. You can have just a few pots on your deck or a large area in your backyard.
Planning your garden is the most important first step. You will want to find a location for your garden preferably in full sunlight. A garden should have at least 6 full hours of sunlight each day to maintain growth. Make sure you have well fertilized soil with good drainage.
What you plant is entirely up to you. It might be a good idea to draw out your plans on paper if planting multiple types of vegetables. Make sure you follow the guidelines for planting depths and spacing so that you do not overcrowd your garden. You should add a tag or sign marking what each row is so that you know what should be coming up there.
Once your garden starts to grow make sure it is getting enough water. During dry periods you will need to water it. Your garden should get about an inch of water or more per week. Mulching between rows will help cut down on weeds and give you an easy path to walk on. Some idea are grass clippings, wood chips, or straw. Throughout the season be on the lookout for insect problems. If you find the problem early you should be able to save your crop. I always check with my local gardening store if I have any issues. Also, keep the weeds down. Weeds will rob your garden of water, light and space. To completely eliminate the weed you must get down to the root.
Once you harvest your plants, you can place the remains of the plant into a compost bin. You can use this next year to fertilize your garden. The following year make sure to rotate your crops to prevent the build up of diseases and preserve nutrients in the soil.
Having your own garden takes a bit of work and dedication. But the enjoyment of eating something freshly picked out of your own back yard makes it worth it!

Earth Day Clean Up
We spent some time at the playground and then enjoyed a nice dinner of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and strawberries. After dinner we headed out to clean up trash. Tony dove right in and was halfway across the park when the rest of us started. Even Jake was getting into some pretty tight spaces to get some garbage.

Weekly Wrap Up
I did the usual of using cloth napkins, turning heat cycle off of dishwasher, and washing all clothes in cold water. Here is what else we did...
~Hubby changed wires and plugs in our van for a total of $60. The car place was going to charge us $300! That was a huge savings.
~I didn't have the heat on for part of the week!
~My dear father-in-law tilled up my garden today so now I am ready to plant!
~My dear father-in-law also helped my dear husband cut down a tree in our backyard. Saving quite a bit of money if we had to pay a service to come chop it down for us.
~I did minimal grocery shopping this week.
~Bought 2 shirts and a pair of Levi shorts for my son at the thrift store, spending $6.
~My family and I picked up trash at the park on Earth Day.
~We officially started using our compost box.
~I have also been taking advantage of our rain barrels to clean off some garden equipment.
How did you do this week? Visit Jennifer over at Getting Ahead to see what others have done this Earth week!

Homemade Compost Box
Just recently by request, we acquired some pallets from a friend of ours so that we could make a compost bin. It is very simple, but I think it will work out perfectly for our needs. We made 2 sides. We used 7 pallets and my hubby just nailed the sides, back and middle together.
Prior to this we would just throw our scraps into a pile in the woods and cover them with leaves. This process also works. I just like having an official location to through everything. And it will all stay in one place.
To learn more about composting, you can read another article I wrote here.

Menu Plan Monday
This is going to be a crazy week for us. We have 4 ballgames and 2 track meets this week, not to mention practices on the days they don't have a meet or game. It is so hard for me to plan meals on the nights we are gone to events. For example on Tuesday our oldest has a track meet 1/2 hour away. We will have to be there by 4:15pm. My second oldest has a baseball game and has to be at his field 15 minutes away at 5:15. There just isn't time to sit down and have a meal. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would love to know what others do on the nights they have events. I could always pack sandwiches but I really don't feel like cold cuts 4 nights this week. Here is a tentative plan for the week.
Monday~Tacos
Tuesday~Busy night with baseball game and track meet, we probably will just eat at the fields.
Wednesday~Family Night~Steak, grilled bread, garlic red potatoes and fruit (no events!)
Thursday~Baseball game, will probably pack a sack dinner for everyone
Friday~Another game...I just don't know :(
Obviously I am struggling this week with my meal plan. Unfortunately the next few weeks all look similar. I need to get a plan going so I am not spending a fortune at the concession stand!
